Brebo was confirmed as the leader of the Formula One World Championship ahead of the 2023 season, which kicks off in Bahrain on March 3-5.
Thanks to Brebo’s rich experience in 48 F1 seasons, cars equipped with Brebo braking system have won 27 drivers’ world championships, 32 constructors’ world championships and 485 Grand Prix championships. Brebo tailors new braking systems for teams, providing hydraulic components (calipers, master cylinders and control by wire units) and friction components (carbon fibre brake discs and pads) for most single-seater cars.
Brebo 2023 Brake system overview
Over the past two decades, Brebo has revolutionized Formula One brake disc design. At the beginning of the 21st century, Brebo’s carbon fiber brake disc was 28mm thick and had up to 72 vents in a single row with a diameter of more than 10mm. Now, the diameter of the front axle carbon disk increased from 278mm to 328mm, and the diameter of the rear axle carbon disk increased from 266mm to 280mm; The front disc is 32mm thick with 1,000 to 1,100 vents and the rear disc has 900 vents for maximum cooling.
In terms of weight, the 2023 braking system is about 300/350g lighter than the 2022 braking system, which is heavier than the 2021 due to new-car matching. However, the 2023 season minimum vehicle weight remains unchanged at 798 kg. In order to achieve this goal, Brebo Group engineers have made unremitting efforts. They optimized the original design of different components, calipers and carbon fiber parts to take the geometric characteristics to the extreme.
The benefits of weight loss are obvious. Ballast is placed at key locations on all vehicles to enhance the vehicle’s sense of balance and directly affect its performance. As a result, lightweight brakes allow more room to balance the vehicle.
Borehole brake pads will also be banned in 2023, according to the regulations.
Brebo engineers expect each single-seater model to have 5% more braking torque this season than the 2022 single-seater model.
Brebo Group supplies calipers to all teams
Brebow’s blockbuster debut in 2023 is true. Brebo will supply all ten Formula One teams with calipers. Of note, nine teams will be equipped with Brebo calipers and one team will be equipped with APRacing calipers. APRacing is based in Coventry, UK and is owned by Brebo Group.
All 20 F1 drivers will be equipped with new nickel-plated six-piston calipers machined from rough castings, the maximum number of pistons allowed by the rules.
The five teams will also use a drive-by-wire unit developed by Brebo and APRacing to control the rear braking system, balancing braking forces between the front and rear axles, instantly changing dissipative braking in response to regenerative braking and ensuring proper balance between the front and rear axles.
Customization, telemetry, and maintenance
Every F1 car has a different configuration. Brebo engineers work closely with each team to determine the optimal ratio of weight to stiffness for the new brake calipers. Brebo has the expertise and technology to tailor brake calipers to each team and assist the team to achieve the desired ratio. Some teams prefer lighter and less rigid calipers, while others prefer stronger and heavier caliper designs. This delicate balance has led Brebow to develop a special solution for the braking system of single-seater racing cars.
The team knows the temperature of the brake disc and caliper at all times because of sensors at the wheel corners. Team engineers use the data collected to help drivers optimise the management of temperature and brake balance in single-seater cars.
New Brebo Racing logo
As the 2023 Formula One World Championship kicks off, Brebo has reinvented its iconic racing brand identity.
Motorsport, which has always been in the Brebo DNA, is undergoing a transformation from pure competition to shared passion, experience and entertainment. It is this passion and natural attitude that drives all of us at Brebo, motivating them to always strive for new goals, to never stop innovating, to strive for new products and solutions, and to look to the future and the new generation.
The new identity of BremboRacing interprets this journey and plays into the iterative process of acing the personality and value of the Bremboracing brand. Passion merges with excellence, innovation, collaboration, ambition and sustainability.
The Brebo Racing logo has also been updated to coincide with the company’s new brand identity, which will be launched in late 2022. The new Brembo has a cleaner, more modern font and adds the word ‘racing’ in a modern style.
In line with Brebo’s strategy of “turning energy into inspiration”, the 2023 F1 championship will also see the launch of a new car promotion campaign under the theme of “Turning passion into performance”.
Starting today, the new logo will be fully rolled out across Brebo’s global digital platforms and offline entities.
